California

Mississippi
Mississippi has consistently ranked at the bottom of national education rankings for years. In 2019, the state ranked 50th in quality of life, 49th in health care, and 48th in education, according to U.S. News & World Report.
Mississippi’s public school system is underfunded and overcrowded. The state ranks last in the nation in per-pupil spending, and many schools lack basic resources like textbooks and reliable internet access. Class sizes are often too large, and there is a shortage of qualified teachers.
Mississippi’s high school graduation rate is also among the lowest in the nation. In 2018, only 77% of students graduated from high school on time. This means that more than one in four students fails to earn a diploma within four years.
The problems with Mississippi’s education system are exacerbated by poverty and racial segregation.
