What are the components of MTSS?

Students who struggle with Tier One instruction are provided additional support through interventions that are delivered in the general education setting by the student’s teacher. These interventions are brief, targeted, and data-based.
Tier Two: Students who continue to struggle despite receiving Tier One interventions receive additional support through small group or one-on-one instruction delivered by a highly qualified teacher or specialist. These interventions are more intense than those in Tier One, and they are designed to address the student’s specific areas of need.
Tier Three: Students who continue to struggle despite receiving Tier Two interventions receive even more intensive supports through individualized instruction delivered by a highly qualified teacher or specialist. These interventions are the most intense and individualized of all three tiers, and they address the student’s unique needs.
At Tier 1, all students receive high-quality, evidence-based instruction and interventions matched to their needs in the core curriculum. This includes an engaging and challenging curriculum, aligned state standards, quality materials and resources, effective teachers, and a supportive school environment. Many schools also provide Tier 1 behavioral interventions and supports.
Early intervention is the first step in MTSS, and it is designed to address academic and/or behavioral difficulties that a student may be experiencing as early as possible. The goal of early intervention is to prevent more serious problems from developing later on. Early intervention services can include things like small group instruction, additional support from teachers or paraprofessionals, and modifications to the curriculum.
The third and final tier of MTSS is intensive intervention. This is where students receive the most intense level of support, typically in the form of small group or one-on-one instruction. In some cases, students may receive this level of support in a separate setting outside of the classroom. The goal of intensive intervention is to help students make as much progress as possible in a short amount of time so that they can eventually be successful in the general education classroom.
