John L. Thornton was born on November 15, 1945 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. His father, John W. Thornton, was a lawyer and his mother, Mary Louise Thornton, was a homemaker. He has two older sisters: Mary Elizabeth and Martha Anne. Thornton graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1967.
